Doubts on Maven, life cycle | Selenium Forum

Am using m2E plugin into Eclipse sir:

What do following commands do ?
Maven build
Maven clean
Maven generate-sources
Maven install
Maven test

Sometimes i get errors :goal is not associated to respective Life cycle.
Sir, can u please explain , what is this life cycle have to do with Selenium automation?
